iKamper Skycamp Review
The Skycamp rooftop tent from iKamper was a massive hit even before it was available commercially.
You might know this company as the brand that raised about 2.3 million USD as a Kickstarter project. Since then, iKamper has come a long way.
At the moment, they have 3 rooftop tents of different sizes and features namely iKamper Skycamp 2.0 (4X), Skycamp 2X, and Skycamp Mini.
In this post, we will be reviewing all the iKamper Skycamp rooftop tents. And, if you are looking for an in-depth review of the roof-top tents from iKamper, then this is the post for you.
If you are looking for a rooftop tent for a family, then you will love this one. This is the Skycamp 2.0, the upgraded version of the original Skycamp.
This improved and upgraded version of the Skycamp was launched in 2019. All of iKamper’s products are known for their myriad of features.
Similarly, iKamper Skycamp 2.0 is not an exception. One of the best features of this RTT (Roof Top Tent) is the fast setup speed. You can set this tent up literally within 1 minute. If you try a bit hard and go fast, then it is possible to set it up in a mere 45 seconds. Interestingly, the take-down takes no more than 1 minute as well.
When you are overlanding, the setup and teak-down time of your rooftop tent always should be as minimum as possible. And, you can see that the iKamper Skycamp 2.0 takes it to the next level with its ‘less than 1 minute’ setup time. This is the largest rooftop tent from iKamper. They have designed it in a way that it can accommodate up to 3 adults or 2 adults with 2 children. You will find a king-size mattress of memory foam in the tent.
Compared to the original Skycamp, they have increased the thickness of the mattress by 50%. Now, the thickness of the mattress is about 1.8 inches. Yes, there are other rooftop tent hardshell tents out there that come with such space. However, when you consider that this is a hard shell rooftop tent, you will see have a hard time finding another spacious tent like this.
These tents come with two hard shell locks. So that you can lock it in place when not in use. In addition, these locks are custom-made and manufactured with stainless steel. That makes the locks resistant to rust, corrosion, and rain as well. Another unique feature of this tent is that it comes with a ‘Skyview Window’. By day, it will bring extra light and you can enjoy the night sky by night through this window. If you wish, you can also roll up the rain fly for extra ventilation.
Added to that, this RTT also has 3 canopy windows —1 main, and two side windows. And, these windows comprise 3 parts that are the vinyl see-through window (inner part), the mesh one (middle part), and the polyester one (outer part). And, the best part is that you can roll up or turn the outer part of the windows into a canopy.
The iKamper Skycamp 2.0 comes in 3 colors as White, Black, and Rocky Black. It comes with a scratch-resistant outer coating that is perfect for off-road abuse. This is one of the best —if not the best— rooftop tents in terms of the build quality.
All of their products are made in their own factory. And, this product is ISO 14001 (For Environmental Management) and ISO 9001 (For Quality Management) certified. At the top, it sports a double-layered hardshell. They have used Fiber-reinforced Plastic (FRP) to manufacture that.
The double-layer system makes the tent soundproof, condensation resistant, and allows the tent to have additional insulation and toughness. Plus, the hard shell roof tent is aerodynamically designed.
That means it will not have any negative impact on the speed of your overlanding rig. The floor of the RTT is made with honeycomb aluminum panels. And, you know that aluminum has the beneficial property of being both lightweight and strong.
Also, they have used a thick and heavy 300 GSM poly-cotton canvas that is water-resistant, breathable, and resistant to condensation. On top of this, they have added both the rain fly and waterproof zippers all through the RTT. These features do a couple of things. First off, it will keep you dry regardless of the weather condition. Secondly, due to the heavy-duty build quality, it can handle wind gusts very easily. Yes, this is known to be wind resistant even in storms.iKamper tried to make sure that the mounting process is quite straightforward. They use a universal mounting system so it is very likely that the Skycamp 2.0 will fit on your overlanding vehicle.
First off, you will need to know the weight limit of your vehicle’s roof. Next, you will need two crossbars if you don’t have them already as these tents are designed to be mounted on two crossbars not on the roof directly. For Skycamp 2.0, the dynamic weight limit of the roof should be about 75 kg or 165 lbs. Plus, the distances between both crossbars for this roof-top tent would be at least 30 inches or 76 centimeters.
iKamper recommends using aftermarket crossbars from Rhino-Rack, Front Runner, Thule, or any of your choice. For the record, the Skycamp 2.0 can actually withstand a load of up to 408 kg or 900 lbs.The Skycamp 2.0 measures (when closed) about 85.8” x 54.3” x 12.5” or 218 cm x 138 cm x 32 cm. And, it measures (when opened) roughly about 85.8” x 82.6” x 45.3” or 218 cm x 210 cm x 115 cm.
The standard length of the ladder is about 90.5 inches. However, you can also use an add-on to make it a bit longer. They have redesigned the ladder to make the level of the steps and secure in Skycamp 2.0. The ladder of the Skycamp 2.0 can hold up a load of up to 150 kg or 350 lbs.
Overall, given the features, the rugged build quality, and the performance, this flagship RTT from iKamper could be a great deal for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Skycamp 2X is the compact version of the original Skycamp 2.0 (4X). As a result, you can expect all the best features and functions of the original flagship Skycamp on this one.
At the same time, there would also be some dissimilarities as well. For instance, the Skycamp 2X is suitable for 2 to 3 people (2 adults and 1 child).
The dynamic weight load of the Skycamp 2X is up to 57 kg or 125 lbs. And, the distance between the crossbars should be at least 30 inches or 76 cm.
The net dimension of this compact RTT is almost similar to the Skycamp 2.0 that is 85.43″ x 54.82″ x 12.72″ or 217 cm x 139.3 cm x 32.3 cm (when closed). And when it is opened, the size would be 85.43” x 54.3” x 45.3” or 217 cm x 138 cm x 115 cm.
Other than these two specs of the iKamper Skycamp 2X, almost everything is similar to the iKamper Skycamp 2.0 (4X). For instance, you can also set up or take down the tent within just 60 seconds.
It also features hard-shell locks made of stainless steel. At the same time, you will also find the 4 windows (1 Skyview, 1 main, and 2 side windows) that consist of 3 parts in this version of Skycamp as well.
The Skycamp 2X is available in 3 colors that are rocky-black, White, and Black. It also uses the same dual-layered hard-shell made from Fiber-reinforced Plastic (FRP). Due to this, the tent fabric is wind/rain/water/condensation proof.
And, the dual-layer also provides extra insulation. Thus, you will not need any tent heaters. This small RTT comes with a lightweight and aerodynamic design. The poly-cotton canvas is breathable and manufactured to resist outdoor abuse.
Like the other tents from iKamper, this version is also manufactured in their South Korean factory under strict quality control. The rainfly on this tent is made with waterproof 150D polyester that has a 3000 mm coating.
Along with that, the Skycamp 2X also sports the trademark ‘World Map’ design on the inside. We must admit, for a compact size, these rooftop tents pack a lot of features.
The Skycamp mini is the latest addition to the iKamper rooftop tent collection. This product has just been released all over the world. As per the name, you might have already guessed that it is the smallest version of the Skycamp rooftop tents.
They designed it in a way so that it can be ideal for smaller vehicles, cabs, or beds of your truck, or simply if you want to save space on the roof.
Due to its small form factor, it can accommodate only 2 persons at once. The net dimension (when closed) of the Skycamp mini is 57.1” x 54.3” x 12.5” or 145 cm x 138 cm x 32 cm. And, the net dimension of the tent when opened is about 57.1” x 82.6” x 45.3” or 145 cm x 210 cm x 115 cm.
Even though it is a bit compact in size, it comes with all the premium features of the original Skycamp and more. For your information, it is also equipped with 2 hard-shell stainless still locks for extra security.
The RTT is made with a dual-layered fiber-reinforced plastic hard-shell. Besides it also comes with built-in 1-inch air insulation.
The Skycamp mini is available in two colors such as rocky-black and Black. And, the tent uses all the same build materials like scratch/water/sound/wind/condensation resistant outer shell.
You will also get the iKamper trademark ‘World Map’ interior design with this mini RTT. Similar to its predecessors, it is manufactured in South Korea with the utmost care from iKamper.
For example, the tent fabric is made with 300 GSM poly-cotton canvas and has waterproof rain fly and zippers. Plus, even though the poly-cotton canvas is heavy and rugged, it is a breathable material. The 150D polyester (PU 3000mm) rainfly can be detached for better airflow and visibility.
This is also aerodynamically designed and has 4 windows including the 1 Skyview, 1 main window, and 2 side windows.
And you will also find a similar honeycomb aluminum panel on the flooring of the tent that makes it durable and well-built. Additionally, you will also receive the mounting brackets for this RTT for free.
The Skycamp mini weighs only about 7 kg or 125 lbs. That means it can be mounted on almost any vehicle given that the crossbars are at least 5 cm or 22 inches apart. The dynamic weight limit is about 57 kg or 12 lbs for this.
All in all, if you are on the hunt for a high-end, compact, yet featureful rooftop tent, the iKamper Skycamp mini can be one of the best deals out there.
Things We Liked
Setup Speed & Easy to Use
As we have already mentioned, the feature that startled us the most is the setup and take-down time of this RTT. It is incredible that you can actually deploy or close the tent just within a minute.
Furthermore, it is very easy to setup. Matter of fact, anybody, even without any prior experience with roof top tents can work with this.
Space & Windows
Frankly, most of the roof-top tents tend to be confined. However, we liked that Skycamp 2.0 (4X) can easily house up to 4 persons.
Also, all the tents from iKamper come with several windows that make it easy to keep the tent breathable and allow the highest amount of airflow.
Simply put, when it comes to the build quality, the roof-top tents from iKamper are of the highest quality. These are hard shell roof top tents made with double layer Fiber-reinforced Plastic with built-in insulation. The 1.8-inch thick memory foam mattress is also great.
Similarly, the honeycomb aluminum panel on the floor of the tent offers additional durability and strength. At the same time, it is designed aerodynamically, so it will not hamper in your driving as well.
Things We Didn’t Like
Storage vs. Size
If you don’t have a large enough garage, you might not be able to fit your vehicle with the RTT mounted on it in the garage. A lot of buyers seem to face this issue.
However, to tackle this, you can dismount the tent from the roof rack and store it separately. Conversely, if you have a big garage, it will not be an issue at all.
Honestly, the iKamper Skycamp roof-top tents are on the expensive side. This is one of its main cons.
Yes, there are cheaper alternatives in the market. However, you must be familiar with the saying ‘He who buys cheap pays twice’.
Interestingly, this saying applies highly in this context. In our opinion, all these 3 versions of the iKamper Skycamp roof-top tents are of premium quality.
And, as they come with numerous beneficial and unique features with a rugged build quality from a reliable brand, we think the price is very much justifiable.
So, when you are buying these tents, you should know that you are making a long term investment. As it is always better to buy a high-quality product with a higher price tag, rather than buying a cheap alternative multiple times.
iKamper Skycamp Accessories
If you want to keep the front side of the tent open during rain, this additional rain canopy will be handy.
If you want you can actually keep your shoes inside the tent. However, if you want to keep the tent clean, you can use this additional shoe rack. You can set it up beside the ladder and keep your shoes securely out of the tent.
iKamper also has an annex room. You can easily attach it to the roof top tent with the supplied guy ropes, zipper, and poles. It is a great accessory if you want to increase the tent space.
Bedding Net Kit
Without this accessory, you won’t be able to store the pillows and other bedding materials inside the tent when it is closed. So, if you don’t want to keep the beddings on your vehicle and want to save some space, you can get the bedding net kit.
Anti-theft Mounting Brackets
You can never be so sure in the wild. So, for extra security, you can get these anti-theft mounting brackets from iKamper. With the help of this, you can lock the tent onto the roof rack securely.
The movie stand can be installed easily inside the tent. As a result, you can enjoy your favorite shows using either your smartphone, tablet, or iPad without leaving the tent.

Conclusion – iKamper Skycamp Reviews
There are various brands that sell RTTs. But we have to admit that iKamper is not your typical roof top tent manufacturer.
They put the highest effort in designing, engineering, and perfecting their Skycamp series roof-top tents. As a result, iKaamper has become one of the most popular brands in this industry.
Here, in this review, we have talked about 3 of their best-selling RTTs.
If you want the most space, then you can go with the Skycamp 2.0 (4X). The Skycamp 2X is great if you want to get an RTT for just two persons.
