RTIC vs YETI

Last updated

When you are looking for comparable coolers to YETI, but perhaps at a lower price range, you have several alternatives. One of those is definitely the RTIC Coolers. Many people wonder how do RTIC vs YETI compare.

These brands are especially good choices if you decided you only need a secondary cooler, next to your 12 Volt refrigerator in your overlanding rig.

Since the coolers made by different brands are built in a similar way, our RTIC vs YETI comparison will highlight the differences, so that you will be able to decide on your purchase.

For a camping trip, the most suitable sizes made by RTIC are the 20, 45, and 65 models. YETI produces similar sizes, the Tundra 20, 45, and 65 making it easy to compare RTIC vs YETI. With YETI you also have the Tundra 35 option.

However, it’s important to note that YETI sizes do not represent actual quart capacity. Sizes are still very comparable, therefore the models can go head to head in comparison.

Comparison of Dimensions, Weight and Capacity

As we mentioned before, the same size ranges make comparing YETI vs RTIC very easy.

Both brands are making 20, 45, and 65 models, however, YETI’s advantage is that they also make one of the different YETI coolers, which is the 35 model to fill the large gap between the 20 and the 45.

However, let’s have a look, if the 20, 45 and 65 quarts (in RTIC’s case) are actually the same for YETI vs RTIC, and how do their weight compare:

RTIC 20 vs YETI 20 comparison

As you can see from the above RTIC vs YETI comparison tables, even though the products are rated the same in terms of quart sizes, their capacity differs.

RTIC coolers are actually more spacious inside (and also larger outside) meaning you’ll be able to throw another couple of beers in, compared to YETI.

This comes with a few extra pounds though, which is why we did not give a higher rating to RTIC coolers:

What Previous Buyers Said

YETI

YETI is a benchmark among camping coolers. Many buyers are literally looking for ‘coolers like YETI’, or an ‘alternative to the YETI’, which also indicates YETI’s great reputation.

The heavy-duty carry handles and latches, thick walls were the favorite attributes mentioned by customers about YETI coolers.

One of the drawbacks that are often mentioned is the YETI coolers’ weight, but if you look at our tables above, one of the advantages of the Tundra coolers, compared to RTIC, is actually their weight.

Comments on YETI Tundra coolers reflect great customer satisfaction. One customer complained about leaking drain spouts, but that seemed to be an exception.ir?t=dobosiconsult 20&l=li3&o=1&a=B0075ICCBK

Additional extras

RTIC

It’s hard to decide whose customers are happier, YETI’s or RTIC’s as buyers happily leave great reviews by the hundreds.

Many of them mention the lower price as a deciding factor to choose RTIC so the value they get for the quality is hard to match by another brand.

The ingenious divider that serves as a cutting board is one of the nicest additions to the cooler, as this great camping equipment doesn’t come with the cooler automatically.

The same goes for the dry goods basket that RTIC also sells separately. YETI provides the same additions. You can carry the ingredients for camping cooking in these baskets.

Buying Guide YETI vs RTIC

Ice Life

When you are buying a cooler, one of the most important factors you should consider would be the ice retention capability of the cooler. Now, both of these brands are known for their great ice life. Plus, they have a myriad of cooler models.

So, it is a bit tough to compare so many of the options appropriately. However, as per many users, YETI is known to be the better one at ice retention compared to the RTIC.

Then again, that doesn’t mean that RTIC is very bad. Rather, they also provide long-lasting ice retention.

On the other hand, there are some specific coolers of RTIC that offer better ice retention quality than some similar YETI coolers.

In short, both of these brands are of top quality in terms of ice life. So you can go with either.

Size Range

As we have mentioned a few times, when it comes to the size range, both YETI and RTIC have a very similar approach. So, you will get coolers of similar sizes from these companies.

However, YETI has a few different sized coolers as well that are not available from RTIC. For instance, YETI has the Tundra 35 quart model, which is not available in the RTIC cooler lineup.

Toughness

These outdoor coolers are made to withstand the harshest of the environment and last a long time. We can say that both of these brands haven’t compromised on the build quality of their coolers.

Some of the common features on coolers these brands are anti-slip feet, roto-molded construction, high-end freezer gasket, thick insulated walls, rugged latches, heavy-duty foam, and more.

So, when it comes to durability, you can side with any of these brands without any hesitation.

Price RTIC and YETI

The price of the cooler is also another significant factor to consider before making a purchasing decision.

The coolers from both these brands are a bit expensive compared to some other brands. You know for a high-grade product, you have to pay a bit extra.

But to be frank, in terms of pricing, RTIC would be the winner. Because even though both brands offer very much similar quality coolers and tumblers, RTIC’s products are a lot cheaper compared to YETI’s.

Appearance

When it comes to appearance and design YETI would be the ultimate winner. Why?

Because they offer their coolers and drinkware in a wide variety of colors and patterns. But RTIC’s color and pattern options are very limited compared to YETI.

YETI even offers customized color or logo options.

Warranty/Company Reputation/Customer Service

Before buying any products, you should check on the brands you are going to buy from. Now, both YETI and RTIC are very popular when it comes to outdoor coolers.

Yet, when it comes to company reputation and reliability, you have to pick YETI. Because this brand started its journey in this industry a long time ago.

Plus, they have created an enormous following with their premium quality products all along. Then again, RTIC as a new brand is also gaining a lot of popularity lately with its reliable product lineup.

In terms of warranty and customer service, both these brands have received great feedback from past buyers. However, YETI has a better warranty policy in both of their hard and soft coolers compared to RTIC.

For instance, RTIC offers only a 30-day warranty on its soft coolers. Whereas YETI has a 3-year warranty on the soft-sided coolers.

Again, YETI also offers up to 7-year warranty on their hard coolers. But you have to consider that RTIC is offering their products at a very reasonable price vs YETI.

So, it is up to you to choose the brand that suits you the most.

Brand History

YETI was founded back in 2006 by two brothers Roy and Ryan in Austin, Texas. This is the company that radically changed the cooler industry.

Since then, they have been offering a myriad of coolers and drinkware with so many unique and useful features and reliable build quality. Thus, they have become one of the best – if not the best – brands in the cooler industry.

On the flip side, RTIC was founded in 2015. But guess what, this brand was also founded by two brothers, Jim and John, in Cypress, Texas. They started to offer very similar quality products compared to YETI but at a very cheaper price.

Due to its quality product, and competitive pricing, RTIC has become one of the biggest rivals of YETI.

FAQ

Is YETI Better Than RTIC?

As per many users, yes, YETI is better than RTIC. Matter of fact, YETI has become the yardstick when it comes to camping coolers.

They offer high-end coolers that are ruggedly built, come with useful features, and quality after-sale service. Many brands on the market are competing against YETI.

Among them, RTIC is one of the top ones. In fact, RTIC has numerous cooler and tumbler options that are almost identical to YETI’s. However, RTIC offers all of its products at a very low price compared to YETI.

So, even though YETI is more popular and better than RTIC, we would recommend getting RTIC coolers as they are almost as good as YETI but with a low price tag.

Is YETI The Same As RTIC?

No. YETI and RTIC are 2 different brands. However, both of these brands manufacture the same products. They are two of the world’s most renowned brands for manufacturing coolers and tumblers for outdoor enthusiasts.

YETI was founded by two brothers, Ryan and Roy, back in 2006. But RTIC was founded also by two brothers, John and Jim, back in 2015. So, RTIC and YETI are different companies.

What Brand Is Better Than YETI?

YETI has become the trademark in the cooler industry. Many off-road enthusiasts even proclaim that YETI is the best brand in this domain.

Then again, there are a few brands that can also compete against YETI head to head such as Orca, RTIC, Canyon Coolers, Pelican coolers, and more.

Conclusion

YETI coolers, as we mentioned several times, is the benchmark in coolers-world.

RTIC is probably the brand who established themselves as the toughest competitor, with their great value for money, quality products and proven track record.

If you just compare each size head-to-head, it is very hard to choose a winner.

RTIC coolers are slightly larger, but on the other hand, YETI Tundras are lighter. We really like the optional cutting board & divider feature in both the RTIC and YETI boxes so, again, the two brands performed head-to-head in that regard too.

Accessories

What we don’t like is the big gap between the 20 quart and the 45 quart sizes in the RTIC range. YETI offers the Tundra 35 model, which is a really great size for a weekend trip where the Roadie 20 is too small, but the 45 quart model may be an overkill.

If we absolutely try to name a winner, we say it is RTIC, for the excellent value for money.

It is a hard decision because of the lack of 35 quart model, but still, the price makes RTIC an overall winner:

RTIC

customers are very satisfied

YETI

Yeti Tundra Cooler rated 9 out of 10

So, if you’re not actually looking for a 35 quart model, we would recommend you to save a few bucks and choose an RTIC Cooler!

If you happen to purchase the 45 or 65 quart RTIC models, also go for the cutting board /divider as that is an excellent accessory.

Both the YETI and RTIC products are manufactured to the highest standards, so we believe this is a choice where you might be loyal to one of the brands.

But if you really want to simplify your decision, just let the price decide between RTIC vs YETI!!

During that time, Ferenc has explored 75 countries on six continents, with overland travel involved in 40 countries on three continents. From his trusty 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a roof-top tent, he’s blogged about experiences that can only be found in the remotest regions on Earth. Along the way, he's gained in-depth knowledge of the novel challenges overlanders encounter and practical ways to meet them. On his website, he shares informed opinions about everything from the best overland gear to how to get a vehicle unstuck. Ferenc has also written for Ih8mud, the Expedition Portal, the Overland Journal, and he is often invited as a guest to outdoors-related podcasts.
